چکیده

If Einstein’s equations are to describe a field theory of gravity in Minkowski spacetime, then causality requires that the effective curved metric must respect the flat background metric’s null cone. The kinematical problem is solved using a generalized eigenvector formalism based on the Segré classification of symmetric rank 2 tensors with respect to a Lorentzian metric. Securing the correct relationship between the two null cones dynamically plausibly is achieved using the naive gauge freedom. New variables tied to the generalized eigenvector formalism reduce the configuration space to the causality-respecting part. In this smaller space, gauge transformations do not form a group, but only a groupoid. The flat metric removes the difficulty of defining equal-time commutation relations in quantum gravity and guarantees global hyperbolicity. key words: null cones, bimetric, spin 2, field formulation, causality

Generating Solutions of Einstein’s Equations

In this article the method of conformal transformation is used to generate perfect fluid solutions of Einstein’s equations from vacuum spacetimes. The conditions on the conformal factor in order to generate a perfect fluid spacetime are presented. With Minkowski as a seed spacetime, these conditions are applied and a particular solution is found. It belongs to the family of Stephani spacetimes ...

Perturbative superluminal censorship and the null energy condition

We argue that “effective” superluminal travel, potentially caused by the tipping over of light cones in Einstein gravity, is always associated with violations of the null energy condition (NEC). This is most easily seen by working perturbatively around Minkowski spacetime, where we use linearized Einstein gravity to show that the NEC forces the light cones to contract (narrow). Given the NEC, t...

From Now to Timelike Infinity on a Finite Grid

In the articles [1, 2, 3, 4] we presented a complete code for solving the conformal Einstein equations which will allow us to study many interesting questions about the global structure of spacetimes by performing numerical experiments. In the present paper we want to demonstrate some of the unique capabilities of this code by a simple example: We calculate the time evolution of gravitational w...

Action principle for the fluid-gravity correspondence and emergent gravity

It has been known for a long time that Einstein’s field equations when projected onto a black hole horizon look very similar to a Navier-Stokes equation in suitable variables. More recently, it was shown that the projection of Einstein’s equation onto any null surface in any spacetime reduces exactly to the Navier-Stokes form when viewed in the freely falling frame. We develop an action princip...

In this paper using the Clifford bundle formalism a Lagrangian theory of the Yang-Mills type (with a gauge fixing term and an auto interacting term) for the gravitational field in Minkowski spacetime is presented. It is shown how two simple hypothesis permits the interpretation of the formalism in terms of effective Lorentzian or teleparallel geometries. In the case of a Lorentzian geometry int...
